Easy food swaps for a healthier lifestyle

Summer is here, and along with longer days and balmy weather, we can look forward to a variety of seasonal fruit and veggies. Here are a few easy food swaps that can help you to pave the way to healthier (and less bloated) summer:

Frozen grapes instead of ice cream

When temperatures soar, we all crave a nice, cool treat. If you’re watching your calories, frozen grapes make a great substitute for decadent, sugar-laden ice cream. Simply buy a punnet of locally-grown table grapes from a trusted retailer like Woolworths, pop it in a Ziploc bag and store it in the freezer. You could even use it as makeshift ice cubes in a pinch. Not sure you want to give up on the creamy goodness entirely? Visit Marcel's for some guilt-free frozen yogurt.

Whole fruit instead of fruit juice

A glass of orange juice contains very little of the pulp or skin from an orange, and none of the fibre content. Skip the glass and go with the whole piece of fruit to reap the full nutritional benefits of this sweet, healthy snack (and save some calories while you’re at it). Stores like Pick n Pay have a wonderful fruit and veggie aisle to explore. While you're there, pick up some spinach to substitute for iceberg lettuce in your salads - spinach is full of vitamin K, vitamin A, calcium, and iron; iceberg lettuce, not so much.

Oil & vinegar instead of processed dressings

Retrain your taste buds to enjoy oil and vinegar instead of sugary, processed dressings. Take-away restaurants like Kauai allow you to choose what kind of dressing you’d like along with your salad, and you can always order it on the side to ensure that you’re happy with the contents.

Green tea instead of coffee

This summer swap out your milky coffee drink of choice for some green tea. This wonderful beverage not only packs a mean antioxidant punch, it also contains the same amount of caffeine you find in coffee (if not more), which means you won’t have to give up your morning kick-starter. Visit The Health Kick to sample a few herbal teas.

TOP TIP: Macha green tea is chockful of antioxidants, plus you can purchase it in powder form – great for antioxidant-rich smoothies. Another refreshing way to enjoy green tea in summer is to make iced tea. Simply steep the tea, pour in a few spoons of honey, allow to chill, and then garnish with something fun like pomegranate rubies and mint. YUM.

These are just a few of the changes you can make to your diet to enjoy a healthier, more vital summer.
