Meet Simply Granola

Featured

As we are all very aware, the COVID-19 related lockdown of 2020 has dealt many small businesses a huge financial blow. We, as Somerset Mall, wanted to play our part in supporting local small businesses from our community during this time of uncertainty. To do this we ran a competition where we asked our shoppers to nominate their favourite local small business, who could then win a promotion and advertising package from Somerset Mall valued at R35 000!

We are happy to announce our Local Small Business competition winner, Simply Granola

Meet Simply Granola

Simply Granola is the brainchild of Nicola Kok, a Chartered Management Accountant turned maker, baker and creator behind the stylish range. It all started out with one family favourite recipe that Nicola says she and her sisters were brought up on. She made this recipe (minus the refined sugars) for her and her husband pretty regularly, and would often take some to snack on at work, until one day a colleague asked if she could order some…

That was 2016, and the recipe that has become known as The Classic has grown into a wider offering, with four more versions of granolas;

Oh My Cocoa
Luxury granola with cocoa, hazelnuts and coconut flakes.

The Sunshine Bowl
Spiced and including sultanas and sunflower seeds.

Let’s Get Figgy
Dried figs, pecan nuts and a pinch of salt.

Peanut Butter Lover
With, you guessed it, peanut butter.

Her other products also include raw honey in various sizes and a range of affordable and high-quality Nespresso® compatible coffee capsules. This year Simply Granola have also added a curated collection of essentials, from healthy snacks like dried fruits, cookies and rusks, to oat milk, sunflower butter and bamboo bandages. Everything is locally made and kind to the planet.

For Nicola, the best parts of being a small business owner is the freedom and time, especially as a mom to a toddler. She says “I am able to pull more weight where Dries and our home is concerned, I can take certain things off his plate and so am able to add more to our days. Our rhythm has completely changed since I work from home, we don’t set alarms, we wake up on our own accord and we tackle our days together.

And if you are considering taking the leap to start your own small business, she warns “As much as I revel in the diversity of tasks that I need to deal with, it can get overwhelming as there isn’t necessarily the luxury of outsourcing certain tasks, or getting extra hands in. Although this makes the road slower, and harder, I have been forced to learn a lot of stuff. I often say to people - with patience, perseverance and Google you really can help yourself to do whatever you set your mind to. Stop finding excuses and start helping yourself!
