How to shop for a sports bra like a pro this summer

Must Haves, Tips & Tricks

Did you know that up to 80% of women wear the wrong size bra, and this number increases when you consider sports-specific underwear? Luckily, there are simple ways to ensure that you get the correct support while you’re out there living your best life. It all starts with understanding the importance of a good sports bra and the different levels of support available out there.

Why is a good sports bra such a big deal?

Activities like running, jumping and fast walking puts quite a bit of stress on your Cooper's ligaments - the thin network of connective tissues that support your breasts from above and below. In fact, if you're running fast enough your boobs could move up and down (and even in figure eight motions!) in increments of up to 20 centimetres - depending on how well-endowed you are of course. As such, it only makes sense to give your chest the correct support to prevent soreness and lasting damage.

How to choose the right level of support

Sports bras come in three different levels of support – low, medium and high impact. You should make your choice based on the type of exercise you do, as well as your cup size.

Low-impact activities include walking, yoga and strength training, while medium impact activities refer to dancing, skiing, cycling, etc. The sports bras you’d need to partake in these activities normally feature a cup-less design and restrict movement by compressing the breasts tightly against the chest wall.

High-impact activities, on the other hand, include running, aerobics, and mountain biking. The bras that provide the best support in these circumstances are made with a defined cup structure to encapsulate and support each breast. Some high-impact bras will use a combination of both encapsulation and compression methods to maximise support.
